What Is a False Positive?
A false positive is when a detector says a text is AI-written, but a real person wrote it. Because detectors only guess from patterns (see how AI detectors work), this can happen to any writer.
Why Human Writing Gets Flagged
- Plain, clear style. Simple sentences are predictable, and predictable text can look like AI.
- Formal writing. Reports, essays, and legal or business text use standard phrases such as "in conclusion" and "furthermore", which detectors often watch for.
- Even sentence length. If most of your sentences are about the same size, the rhythm looks flat.
- Heavy editing. Grammar tools and rewriters can smooth out the natural bumps in your writing.
- Short text. A few sentences do not give a detector enough to work with, so the score is unreliable.
Non-Native English Writers Are Hit Hardest
A 2023 study by Stanford researchers, published in the journal Patterns, tested several popular AI detectors on essays written by non-native English speakers. The detectors wrongly marked more than half of them as AI-generated, while they did much better on essays by native speakers. People who are still learning English often use simpler words and shorter patterns, and that is what the detectors read as AI.
What to Do If Your Writing Is Flagged
- Stay calm. A score is a hint, not a fact.
- Look at which sentences were flagged and why. Our tool shows the reason for each one.
- Keep proof of your process: notes, outlines, and the version history in Google Docs or Word.
- Add your own voice, real examples, and a mix of short and long sentences.
- If someone is judging your work, ask them to look at your process and not only at one number.
A Note for Teachers and Editors
Please do not use an AI detector score as the only reason to accuse someone. Use it as a first look, then talk with the writer, compare with their past work, and ask them to explain their draft.
Want to test a draft yourself? Try our free AI text checker. It runs in your browser and shows why each sentence was flagged. To make a draft less robotic, use the AI word remover.
